Why Colombian emeralds
Colombia produces the green most people picture when they think of an emerald: slightly bluish, highly saturated, lit from within rather than looking flat or grey. Zambian material runs cooler and darker. Brazilian tends lighter. Neither is inferior, but Colombian is what the market prices highest, and it is what our family has traded since the 1930s.
Origin is stated on every stone here. Where we have Zambian or Brazilian material, we say so.
On oil and treatment
Almost every emerald on the market has been oiled. It is an accepted practice going back centuries, filling surface-reaching fissures and improving apparent clarity. What matters is the degree: minor, moderate or significant.
We state which on every stone. A moderately oiled emerald is not a bad buy, but you should know what you are paying for and the price should reflect it. An emerald described only as "natural" with no treatment disclosure is a stone whose seller is hoping you do not ask.
We do not sell lab-created emeralds.
Judging an emerald
Colour does most of the work. A vivid medium-toned green will outprice a larger, paler stone almost every time. Tone matters as much as hue — too dark reads black in poor light, too light reads washed out.
Clarity works differently than with diamonds. Emeralds are expected to have inclusions, called the jardin for their resemblance to foliage, and an eye-clean emerald of good colour is genuinely rare. Inclusions that do not disturb the colour or threaten the stone's structure are character rather than fault. They are also one of the ways a gemmologist tells a natural stone from a synthetic.
Carat weight matters less than people assume. A 1.5 carat emerald of fine colour beats a 3 carat stone of ordinary colour on both price and appearance.

Photographs flatten emerald. Colour shifts noticeably between daylight, shopfront lighting and a phone screen, and no image conveys how a stone reads on a hand.

Frequently Asked Questions About Emerald Rings
Colour. Colombian material produces a slightly bluish, highly saturated green the market values above other origins. Rarity in the finer grades does the rest.
Almost all emeralds are, and ours are no exception unless stated otherwise. We disclose the degree on every stone.
The natural inclusion pattern inside an emerald, named for its resemblance to foliage. Expected rather than a defect, and one of the ways a gemmologist distinguishes natural from synthetic
Natural emeralds have inclusions; lab-created ones are often too clean. Colour is usually too uniform in synthetics. Under magnification a gemmologist can identify growth patterns. If you have a stone you are unsure about, bring it in
Warm soapy water and a soft brush. Never an ultrasonic cleaner — it can drive out the oil and expose the fissures underneath
