Rubies are so valuable for several converging reasons. The geological conditions required to produce gem-quality red corundum are specific and uncommon: chromium and aluminium rarely occur together in the concentrations required for ruby formation, and when they do, the resulting crystals are frequently too small, too included, or too dark to yield fine faceted stones. Fine ruby above one carat, vivid, clean, and unheated, is among the rarest materials in the natural gemstone world. The per-carat prices of exceptional rubies at major auction houses have exceeded those of comparable diamonds, which gives some sense of where the stone sits in the hierarchy of rarity. 

Ruby Colour: The Primary Driver of Ruby Value

This term originated in the Burmese ruby trade and refers specifically to the colour of the first drop of blood from a freshly killed pigeon: a saturated, slightly bluish red with no brownish or orangey secondary tone. The term is now used by major gemmological laboratories, including GIA and Gübelin, as a quality designation for stones that meet a defined colour standard. 

It is important to understand that pigeon's blood is an exceptional extreme, not a market standard. The majority of fine rubies do not achieve this designation, and many excellent, genuinely valuable stones fall outside it. What the standard establishes is a reference point: the more closely a stone's colour approaches pure, vivid red without brownish or orangey contamination, the more valuable it is, regardless of whether it carries a formal pigeon's blood designation. 

Tone and Saturation 

Ruby colour is assessed across three dimensions: hue (the primary red and any secondary colours), tone (how light or dark the stone is), and saturation (how vivid or muted the colour is). The most valuable rubies are medium to medium-dark in tone, light enough to display the red vividly without appearing washed out, but dark enough to have presence and depth. Very dark stones, while intensely red, can appear almost black under certain light conditions and lose the luminosity that makes fine ruby distinctive. Very pale stones approach pink sapphire territory and are valued differently. 

Saturation matters as much as hue. A stone with a pure red hue but low saturation will appear dull and lifeless. A stone with high saturation where the red is vivid, alive, and consistent across the face of the stone is the standard the market rewards. Secondary tones of brown or orange reduce value; secondary blue, present in small amounts, is considered to enhance the red and is part of what makes Burmese ruby so prized. 

The Effect of Light on Ruby Colour 

Ruby colour responds strongly to the quality of the light source. In natural daylight or cool-white light, the red is at its most accurate. Under incandescent or warm light, the red deepens, and the chromium fluorescence is enhanced. This is why rubies have traditionally been favoured for candlelit settings and evening jewellery. A stone that looks magnificent under one light source and disappointing under another has uneven colour quality. The finest rubies maintain their vividness and depth across all lighting conditions. 

Ruby Clarity: What to Expect From a Natural Ruby 

Ruby clarity is assessed differently from diamond clarity, and understanding this distinction is essential for any buyer approaching natural ruby for the first time. 

All natural rubies contain inclusions. This is not a flaw or a compromise it is a characteristic of the species. The geological conditions that produce gem-quality ruby also produce characteristic internal features: fine silk (rutile needles), crystal inclusions, fingerprint inclusions, and healed fractures. A ruby without inclusions is so rare as to be genuinely exceptional and is priced as such. For most buyers, the question is not whether inclusions exist but how they affect the stone. 

What Ruby Clarity Actually Means 

The practical assessment of ruby clarity focuses on three things: whether inclusions are visible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance, whether they affect the transparency and colour of the stone, and whether they create structural vulnerabilities, particularly surface-reaching fractures that could propagate under the stresses of daily wear. 

An eye-clean ruby, one whose inclusions are not visible without magnification, is the preferred standard for fine jewellery and commands a premium. A stone with inclusions visible to the naked eye but distributed away from the face-up centre, and not compromising the stone's transparency, is perfectly appropriate for ruby rings, ruby pendants, and ruby earrings at a more accessible price point. Inclusions concentrated in the centre of the stone, or fractures that reach the surface, are the characteristics that actually reduce quality in a meaningful way. 

Silk and Its Effect on Value 

Fine silk inclusions, microscopic rutile needles arranged in intersecting planes, are characteristic of certain ruby origins, particularly Burma and Sri Lanka. In small quantities, silk can actually enhance a ruby's appearance by scattering light across the stone and creating a soft, velvety quality to the colour. This is part of what gives fine Burmese ruby its distinctive warmth. In larger quantities, silk reduces transparency and dulls the colour. The difference between enhancing and detracting silk is a matter of degree that a qualified gemmologist can assess under magnification. 

Ruby Grading for Clarity 

Formal ruby grading for clarity uses a system adapted from diamond grading but with different expectations. Where a VS-clarity diamond is considered very good, a VS-clarity ruby, one with very small inclusions visible under 10x magnification but not to the naked eye, represents a relatively high standard for the species. GIA uses a type classification system for coloured stones, placing ruby in Type II (stones that typically grow with some inclusions in nature), which means the clarity expectations are adjusted accordingly. A Type II stone graded as eye-clean has already met a meaningful standard. 

Heat-Treated Ruby: What It Is and Why It Matters 

Heat treatment is the most commercially significant factor in ruby valuation after colour, and it is the one most frequently misunderstood by buyers new to the stone. 

What Heat Treatment Does 

The vast majority of rubies on the market have been heat-treated, subjected to high temperatures in a controlled environment to improve colour and clarity. Heat treatment dissolves silk inclusions, improves colour saturation, and reduces the visibility of rutile needles. The process is permanent and does not affect the stone's durability. It is an accepted, longstanding, and widely disclosed practice in the ruby trade. 

What heat treatment cannot do is create a fine ruby from poor material. It can improve a good stone to an excellent one, but a ruby with fundamentally weak colour or heavily fractured clarity cannot be heat-treated into a fine gem. The baseline quality of the rough determines the ceiling of what treatment can achieve. 

Unheated Ruby: Why It Commands a Premium 

An unheated ruby is a stone whose colour and clarity are entirely as nature produced them, without any thermal modification. Unheated rubies with fine colour are exceptionally rare the combination of natural vivid colour and acceptable clarity without heat treatment occurs in a very small proportion of ruby rough. This rarity is reflected in a significant price premium: a fine unheated Burmese ruby of equivalent apparent quality to a heated stone can command two to five times the price, depending on the market. 

For collectors and serious buyers, unheated status is one of the most important distinctions to establish. It must be confirmed by laboratory testing, specifically, the examination of inclusions under magnification for evidence of heat alteration, and in some cases, spectroscopic analysis. The GIA and other major laboratories can determine heat treatment status and will specify this on a coloured stone report. Glass Filling and Other Treatments 

Beyond standard heat treatment, some rubies have been treated with lead glass filling, a process that fills surface-reaching fractures with a glass compound to dramatically improve apparent clarity. This treatment is not comparable to standard heat treatment: it significantly alters the stone's composition, requires special care (the filling can be damaged by acids and ultrasonic cleaners), and dramatically reduces value. Glass-filled rubies should be priced as a separate category from heat-treated or unheated natural rubies, and laboratory certification will always disclose this treatment. Ruby Origin: Which Rubies Are Most Valuable 

Origin is a significant value factor in ruby, more so than in most other gemstones. The geological and geographical source of a ruby affects its colour profile, its inclusion characteristics, and its market desirability, often independently of its measurable quality. 

Burmese Ruby 

Burmese ruby from the Mogok Valley in Myanmar is considered the world benchmark for the species. The chromium concentration in Mogok material produces a red of particular purity and intensity, and the marble host rock minimises the iron content that introduces brownish or purplish secondary tones in ruby from other origins. Fine Burmese rubies with pigeon's blood colour and unheated status represent the apex of ruby value stones that routinely achieve the highest per-carat prices of any coloured gemstone at international auction. 

Mogok ruby is not available in significant commercial quantities. Most material reaching the market is either of moderate quality, heavily treated, or both. Exceptional Burmese rubies are collectors' stones, and origin confirmation from a recognised laboratory is essential. 

Mozambique Ruby 

Mozambique has emerged as the most commercially significant ruby source in the contemporary market. Discovered in the Montepuez region in 2009, Mozambique rubies produce a vivid, saturated red often slightly more orange-toned than classic Burmese material, though fine specimens approach the Mogok colour profile closely. Mozambique ruby is available in larger sizes and in greater commercial quantities than Burmese material, making it the dominant source for fine ruby jewellery at most price points. 

Other Origins 

Sri Lankan rubies tend toward a lighter, pinker red, sometimes very beautiful, but rarely achieving the saturation of Burmese or Mozambique material. Madagascar produces material across a broad quality range, including some fine specimens. Thai and Cambodian rubies historically produced darker, more iron-rich material with a stronger brownish secondary tone. Each origin has a characteristic colour profile, and a gemmologist familiar with the trade can often identify the probable origin from the stone's colour and inclusions alone, a skill that laboratory certification confirms. 

Ruby in Jewellery: Applying What You Know 

Understanding ruby grading translates directly into better decisions when buying ruby rings, ruby pendants, ruby earrings, or loose rubies for a custom commission. 

  • For ruby rings intended for daily wear: prioritise colour and a setting that protects the stone. A bezel or well-maintained claw setting suits a ruby worn daily. Eye-clean clarity is preferred but not essential. A stone with minor inclusions distributed away from the face-up centre is perfectly appropriate and often considerably more accessible in price.
  • For ruby pendants: a pendant is not subject to the same impact and abrasion as a ring, which allows a little more flexibility on clarity.
