Why Choose Gems & Gold for Ruby Jewellery

There are many places to buy ruby jewellery online in Australia. Here is what distinguishes Gems and Gold.

  • A working studio in Perth, not a drop-shipper. You can visit our King Street workshop, see our craftspeople at work, and have a direct conversation about the piece you are considering - before, during, or after its creation.
  • Every ruby comes with a certificate. Independent gemmological assessment covering origin, treatment, colour characteristics, and carat weight. Nothing is withheld.
  • Unheated ruby options available. Heat treatment is standard and accepted in the ruby trade, but unheated stones occupy a different category of rarity and value. We can show you the difference and help you decide what matters for your purchase.
  • Verified customer reviews. Our Google reviews are from real customers, with real names and photographs.

Ruby Buying Guide (from a real gemologist)

What to understand before purchasing natural ruby jewellery.

Colour

Colour is the primary value driver in Ruby. The most prized specimens display a vivid, pure red with a slight blue secondary - the quality historically described as pigeon's blood. In the broader market, a clean, well-saturated medium red is both beautiful and practical for everyday jewellery. Very dark stones can appear brownish under certain lights; very pale stones approach pink sapphire territory. The most wearable rubies are those with lively, consistent colour across different lighting conditions.

Clarity

All natural rubies contain inclusions - fine needles, fractures, and crystal inclusions are characteristic of the species. A ruby without inclusions is exceptionally rare and museum-grade. For jewellery purposes, what matters is that inclusions are not visible at normal viewing distance (approximately 30 centimetres) and that they do not structurally compromise the stone. Inclusions in a natural ruby are not a flaw to be concealed - they are evidence of natural origin.

Heat treatment

The majority of rubies on the market have been heat treated to improve colour and reduce the visibility of inclusions. This is a standard, permanent, and widely accepted practice in the trade. We offer a limited selection of unheated ruby jewellery for those who require it - ask us about current availability. Treatment status is disclosed on every stone.

Cut

A well-cut ruby will reflect light evenly and display its colour with maximum effect. Cut quality matters more than carat weight: a smaller, well-proportioned ruby will outperform a larger stone cut primarily to retain weight. Look for even light distribution across the face of the stone, with no large dark or transparent areas.

Origin

Burmese rubies from Myanmar remain the most internationally recognised and commercially prized, but exceptional material also comes from Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka.

Warm water, a small amount of mild soap, and a soft brush are sufficient for regular cleaning. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if the stone has significant inclusions or has been fracture-filled, as vibration can aggravate both. We offer complimentary cleaning at our Perth studio.

Ruby responds strongly to light quality. In warm incandescent light it can appear deeper or slightly more purple; in natural daylight its red is at its most vivid. If you are assessing colour, a window in good natural light is the best reference point.

Our rubies are sourced from Myanmar, Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka. Each stone is examined individually before it enters our collection, and origin is documented and disclosed.
